The Cascade Lady Cadets competeted against Southmont Lady Mounties in the Sectional 41 Championship game hosted at Cascade High School. The Cadets and Mounties had played two weeks earlier in the season and the Lady Cadets used two early goals to defeat the Lady Mounties. Today’s game would have a championship effort by both teams for 94 minutes but a different outcome from the earlier game.
The Lady Mounties scored the first goal of the game in under 1 minute when they scored on a deep shot that had bounced outside of the 18yd box after a corner kick. The early goal shook the Cadets up and they responded in 8 minutes with a penalty kick goal off the foot of Ava Cook. The physical game remained tied for the rest of the first half. After the quick goal at the start, the Lady Mounties only managed 2 shots the rest of the first half while the Cadets took 6 on the Southmont goalie.
The second half continued the same physical play from the first half but the Lady Cadets now possessed the wind at their backs. The Lady Cadets were awarded their second PK of the game when Lauren Guetig was fouled by the Southmont goalie at the top edge of the penalty box. Sydney Gabbard smashed the ball into the back of the net giving the Cadets a 2-1 lead with over 34 minutes remaining in the game. The Cadets and Mounties kept up the physical play for the next 30 minutes. Occassionally, the Lady Cadets would get a quick penetrating series that kept the Mounties on their heels but no significant offense developed for either team. With 5:02 to go in the game, the Lady Mounties played a lob into the penalty box that was grabbed by the Cadets keeper Maddie Walker. The Mounties forward crashed into the Cadets goalie and the ball slipped out of her hands and into the goal. The late score put the game tied at 2-2 and regular time ended in a tie. Both teams played two 7 minutes halves of extended time at alternating ends of the field. The score remained tied after the two extended periods of play and the game moved to PKs.
Southmont won the coin flip and chose to shoot first. The Lady Cadets chose Laura Cameron, Ava Cook, Kaylin Cook, Grace Franklin, and Sydney Gabbard to shoot for the Cadets. The Cadets could only get one ball into the net while Southmont netted two goals in the PKs.
The Lady Cadets finished their season with a record of 9-6-2 on the season. Southmont advances to play Centerville at the Regionals. For the four Cascade seniors: Emily Branscum, Ellie Dugan, Torie Potters, and Chase Searcy, the loss ended their high school career. Coach Franklin commented on the game, “The loss was emotionally tough for the whole team but I feel terrible for the Senior players. They had tried so hard all season and wanted to end the season on a high note. They were great leaders on the team and their effort can’t easily be replaced. I was honored to have them on the team”
